2020 was a shit year from a lot of perspectives. In fact, 2020 was a shit year from MOST perspectives… but it was a great year for metal. This is the last in a series of test videos that I made while setting up a new overhead camera (a Canon Vixia HF R800); getting it set up right took a number of modifications and adjustments, but I finally got it the way I want it.
The Ghost is marketed as a "Spanish Inspired Hot Sauce", presumably because of the unusual butter-and-powdered-chiles base. This is similar to Spain's bravas sauce, which is traditionally made like a cream sauce by dispersing broth in a simmering olive oil base containing a blend of mild and hot paprika and flour.
Old Man Metal combines spicy food, metal and beer on the tenth episode of his solo podcast with full ASTMO hot sauce reviews of Big Red's Three Kings, Lucky Dog's Hellhound and Volcanic Peppers' Lava sauces, including an in-depth look at some of the capsaicin-bomb chile peppers they use— the habanero, the ghost pepper, the Trinidad Scorpion and the infamous Carolina Reaper— plus a new metal video for Bite of a Parasite, from Indiana black/thrash/speedsters GraveRipper, built using heavily-GIMPed public domain images, crossfades and pan and zoom animation... all while drinking Torch Pilsner, a great craft beer lager from Foothills Brewing in Winston-Salem.
Old Man Metal combines beer and metal on the ninth episode of his solo podcast, taking a look at the state of North Carolina craft beer during COVID by breaking down his latest beer haul, featuring beer from New Anthem Beer Project, Edmund’s Oast, Foothills Brewing Company, Trophy Brewing Company and more, including an in-depth look at the fifteen different flavor-bomb hops they use— like Citra, Mosaic, Simcoe and El Dorado— and an impassioned discussion of hop fade and the importance of fresh beer and code dating, closing out with a pair of new metal video clips from Red Dead and AJ Nemesis... all while drinking a pint of Blair’s Breakfast Stout, a great coffee-oats-and-lactose stout ale from Wilmington Brewing Company.

Cruel Fate - A Quaternary of Decrepit Night Mares (2019) 4/5 stars Great straightforward debut from Canada's Cruel Fate. Nothing fancy; eight tracks of mostly short-to-midlength riff-heavy verse/chorus meat-and-potatoes death metal: crushing chugs, meaty power chords, and some tremolo picked riffing over tight, mostly traditional drumwork. Taken as a whole, the album has great flow.... Continue Reading →
