Old Man Metal’s Musings, Episode 11

Old Man Metal looks at the Top Ten Metal Albums of the Year for 2020 in a New Year's Day Twitter countdown on the eleventh episode of his solo podcast. Great new crossover, thrash, death metal, black/speed, black/thrash, black/death, and death/thrash from Vader, Midnight, Power Trip and more! After listening to literally hundreds of great new metal albums in 2020, these are the best of the best.

The Ghost

The Ghost is marketed as a "Spanish Inspired Hot Sauce", presumably because of the unusual butter-and-powdered-chiles base. This is similar to Spain's bravas sauce, which is traditionally made like a cream sauce by dispersing broth in a simmering olive oil base containing a blend of mild and hot paprika and flour.

Nothing fancy; eight tracks of mostly short-to-midlength riff-heavy verse/chorus meat-and-potatoes death metal: crushing chugs, meaty power chords, and some tremolo picked riffing over tight, mostly traditional drumwork. Taken as a whole, the album has great flow.... Continue Reading →

Cerebral Rot - Odious Descent into Decay (2019) 4/5 stars First full-length slab of filthy, Autopsy-bred death metal from Seattle's Cerebral Rot. Composed of mostly mid-length tracks, with three longer ones— opener, middle track, and closer; all of them eschew the verse/chorus paradigm, opting instead for linear free-form verse. Down- and mid-tempo doomy power chords,... Continue Reading →
