Join Old Man Metal for a test of the Røde VideoMic Pro Compact Directional On-camera Microphone, as he compares it to the on-board microphone on the Panasonic Lumix FZ-1000 camera, and then tests it at different settings, varying both the gain on the Røde VideoMic Pro and the auxilliary microphone gain on the camera, and determines the optimal settings for the test environment.
The resulting test audio is layered to allow for the most direct comparison possible, and the worst-case tests in a very lively, echo heavy room dramatically demonstrate the improvements that can be had in #podcast audio quality by upgrading to a directional camera-mounted #microphone like the #Røde.
Further comparison to an affordable lavalier microphone from Tascam shows that the lavalier microphone provides the best audio quality of all, under the test conditions.
